Framing values so they serve you well.
During a recent coaching conversation I was lucky enough to be working with an exceptional and highly experienced school Principal.
Our conversation led us to frame the idea of 'value' in a granular way. This helped create a kind of framework that could be used to reflect on situations, decision-making processes, addressing dilemmas etc.
It shaped something like this:
I am Valued: My doing, way of being and thinking are acknowledged and affirmed. I recognise my own self-worth and this is reciprocated by others.
I add Value: I am able to make a contribution. What I do, how I am, my thinking, my skills positively make a difference to my work and those around me.
What I do is of Value: Activities I engage in, interactions I have are worthwhile and have real purpose. This may be at the level of the individual, team, organisation or system.
Alignment to my Values: Activities I engage in are aligned to what is important and significant to me. This brings a sense of meaning and fulfilment in my life and work.
Asking the question 'To what extent does this course of action, decision, or situation align with the above?' may be helpful in determining what's next .....
Useful? How would you use this? How might you adapt it?
